'Travelling
around the
beautiful county
of Cornwall, it
is surprising
how often you
stumble across
potteries in out
of the way
corners, in
sheltered coves,
down narrow
winding lanes,
or braving the
elements on
bleak headlands.
Its almost as
though the
studio pottery
is an organic
part of the
Cornish
landscape, and
certainly
potters who live
and work there
feel that the
stimulating
surroundings
play an
essential role
in the creative
process...' |

'Donyatt, a
small village
located on the
outskirts of
Ilminster in
Somerset,
provides today's
visitors with
very few clues
to its ceramic
heritage, except
perhaps the
evocatively
names 'Crock
Street'. The
potteries of
Donyatt are
remarkable for
two reasons -
the unbroken
succession of
production and
their
conservative
approach to
design...' |

'Torquay, Poole
and Honiton are
all West Country
towns famous for
their pottery.
One man links
all three -
Charles Collard,
master potter
and ceramic
artist, who was
born 130 years
ago. Born on
September 1874,
the son of
Francis Collard,
poulterer, and
his wife
Elizabeth. At
the age of 12 he
was apprenticed
to the Aller
Vale pottery at
Kingerswell,
near Newton
Abbot, and thus
began nearly 70
years of potting...' |

'The county of
Devon is
renowned for its
rich red clay.
it is noted that
between the
towns of
Barnstaple and
Bideford there
is an excellent
seam of very
plastic
fine-grained
clay used by
potters during
the 17th and
18th centuries
and probably
from much
earlier time.
Born in 1770 and
by the age of
30, George
Fishley had
established his
own pottery at
muddlebridge...' |

possibilities
are endless when
discovering
shops in and
around Bath when
purchasing
antiques, if you
know where to
look. We
couldn't
possibly include
everyone, but
suggest that you
start by
exploring these
recommended
businesses, and
you will find,
as we have,
these dealers
are helpful,
knowledgeable
and welcoming...' |

'A bi-monthly
section of the
Antiquexplorer magazine
dedicated to the
promotion of
galleries and
Fine Art related
businesses both
classical and
contemporary.
‘Artexplorer’
has proved to
be extremely
popular with
collectors and
dealers alike...' |
